DEFINITION OF HOMESTAY

A stay at a residence by a traveler and especially by a visiting foreign or international student or volunteer who is hosted by a local family. A homestay provides an opportunity for a volunteer to stay with a local family for a fee.

It’s an affordable accommodation alternative, ideal for independent leisure travellers of all ages, interns, gap year students, students living abroad and anyone seeking a real and genuine travel experience. It allows visitors/volunteers to experience local communities and cultures of the place they’re visiting.

The host parents/ host family (Stephanie and Paul) opens their comfortable home to you to experience South African culture/s.   Please respect them and always be helpful around the home. They are always interested in your daily activity, so please share your experience with them.

Welcome then to the most luxurious HomeStay destination in Africa! When staying at Plett HomeStay a volunteer becomes part of a regular household/family, which includes various medial responsibilities amid living at a destination second to none.  Volunteers are expected to make themselves available to keep the main kitchen and dining room area clean after dinner, help food the pets, and be part of general daily household activities.

ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS

Plett HomeStay is situated in Plettenberg Bay overlooking a private estate and nature reserve. Plett HomeStay is situated below street level in a quiet and safe neighbourhood.   Based on public records available, Plett HomeStay could rank 1st, situated a mere 21 minutes’ stroll away from beautiful beaches, nestled in a spacious and serene, end-of-town area in arguably the most sought after coastal destination in South Africa.  Here you will meet other volunteers and locals, and get to know Plettenberg Bay with a vast array of activities, many of them part of the Plett HomeStay Marketing portfolio. In your unit / room you have:

Plett HomeStay is a stone throw from town, pubs, restaurants, internet cafe’s, shopping malls, craft markets, cafe’s, a pharmacy, doctor, dentists, etc. Local transport other than to and from projects are supplied by house parents at a fee, or a charter / taxi service can be provided also at a fee or taxi fare.

IF YOU STAY AT PLETT HOMESTAY:

You will receive 2 meals a day (Continental Breakfast (cold) but in winter, a hot porridge option is available. You have your own fridge in your room but Plett HomeStay supplies basic foods. (You will need to advise us if any of your basic food index is depleted while here).

The water from the taps is drinkable for everyone.  If volunteers want to get bottled water that would be at their own cost. Volunteers make own lunch in their own kitchen (bread, ham, cheese are provided) This is placed in your own fridge and kitchenette area. Hot meals are served in the evenings and volunteers and the host family usually eat together. Your laundry will be washed and ironed. | Bedding and Towels are provided, but you are expected to maintain a high standard by keeping your room neat.

Spaghetti Bolognese  |  Macaroni and Cheese  |  Cottage Pie  |  Chicken Dish  |  Curries | Stews | Vegetables or Salads  |  Soups in winter or cold evenings  |  Barbeque | Traditional South African Foods.(Vegetarian meals can be arranged but it needs to be arranged in advance with house parents and Vegan dietary requirements can be accommodated at a re-structured cost)

TRANSPORT TO AND FROM VOLUNTEER PROJECTS

House parents will arrange a daily pickup and drop. A shuttle will be arranged for you daily to the projects. By staying here, you will not only have the opportunity to volunteer at our sanctuaries, you will also have the opportunity to meet locals, have fun, enjoy nightlife, swim and surf in the ocean, and explore a town so beautiful that it will take your breath away.

OUR LUXURY APPROACH REGARDING UNITS/ROOMS

All units/rooms are large en-suite spaces.

Unit 1 (hosts 2 volunteers) and they share a bathroom with bath and shower and toilet etc.

Unit 2 (hosts 3 volunteers) and they share a shower and toilet etc.

Unit 3 : Brat Pack | Dorm Unit (hosts 4 volunteers) and they share a shower and toilet etc.

WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM VOLUNTEERS? 

Keep your room and area clean at all times. Make your bed every morning | Assist house parents in kitchen.Wash the dishes |Keep your kitchen area clean at all times. Advise house parents if you need any breakfasts, bread, yoghurt, cold meats.

Walk dogs |Put your washing in the washing basket provided

MINIMUM AGE

    18 years

LEVEL OF ENGLISH INTERMEDIATE – UPPER INTERMEDIATE

(Need to have a good understanding and conversational English Language)

Need a love for people and animals and also wanting to learn more about them.

TRAVELLING TO PROJECTS UPON ARRIVAL

Volunteers transport to Plettenberg Bay can be done in the following matter:-Get a bus (www.intercape.co.za) in the morning (around 6:00 from Cape Town) which would mean that you reach Plettenberg Bay roughly at 10h00 from Port Elizabeth and the Cape Town bus arrives in Plett around 15:00. All bookings can be made online.

Flights are available to George airport | Airport transfer will be arranged your house parents.

Arrival & departure transfer is at an additional charge

WHAT TO BRING?

There are no special requirements in this regard but we recommend bringing pocket money, toiletries, any medication, sunscreen, mosquito repellents, travelling/outdoor clothing and gear, good outdoor shoes and sneakers, books/laptop, camera, any items of personal nature, etc. All these items (and anything else you might need) are readily available at local supermarkets in South Africa.

COSTS?

Minimum duration: 4 weeks  (but if a volunteer want to still join the social development projects and stay for a shorter period they need to arrange this with House Parents as an adjustment has to be made. 

Maximum duration:  One (1) calendar year with option to renew.

Rate for 4 weeks stay : R850 per person per day (Transport to projects, 3 meals a day, laundry etc) = R23800.00

Rate for 3 weeks stay : R950 per person per day (Transport to projects, 3 meals a day, laundry etc) =  R19950.00

Rate for 2 weeks stay :  R1050 per person per day (Transport to projects, 3 meals a day, laundry etc) =R14700.00

R900.00 per transfer for airport from George airport

R200.00 per person is the transfer fee to collect volunteers at bus pickup | drop off point in Plettenberg Bay

PROBATION PERIOD

All volunteers are subject to a two-week probation period.

SICK DAYS

House Mother will notify the project by 8h00 if you are going to be absent due to illness.

We do not accept responsibility or liability for damage caused by clients to their vehicles during exiting and entering the property.  We do however offer a valet service to assist customers to enter, park, turn around or exit the property and accept liability if any damage to motor vehicles occurs during the valet service performed.  All our residential units presented to the market for commercial or private rental have safe access doors and industrial strength sliding gates to assure the safety of our visitors. With this measure in place and only two (2) sets of access keys per unit, all persons including ourselves as owners and will not access the unit without prior authorisation from occupants. In the case of any damage claims on vehicles or any other occupant property while occupying our guest units, the proper investigation of such claims will be done by the relevant authorities to secure a result.
